Warehousing & Distribution
At Tyson Foods, we depend on our Warehousing and
Distribution Division to store the product we make and
get it to our customers in a safe and timely manner.
Virtually all of our products, except fresh chicken, are
frozen and are stored and transported in a frozen state.
Warehousing
After
production, our products must be handled with care to
maintain the level of quality our customers have grown
to expect from Tyson Foods. Most of our products are
sent to one of two Tyson-owned distribution centers, one
in Rogers, Arkansas, and the other in Russellville,
Arkansas.
Together, these two facilities have a capacity of 60
million pounds of product. And we ship out around 30
million pounds of product every week to our customers
from these facilities. In addition, we work with outside
cold-storage facilities to handle the large volume of
product.
Our distribution centers operate 24 hours a day, 7
days a week, using one of the most advanced inventory
systems in the country. Our Warehouse Management System
is computer-based and tracks product with bar code tags
and laser scanners. Because the system is real time, we
know the location of every product in our facility at
any time. That's an impressive task, considering we
store around 4,000 different product lines.
In addition, our system of product date codes lets us
know the plant where a product was produced and the line
that produced it. We also know the day and hour, and
sometimes, the minute of production.
All of this effort helps guarantee the Tyson product
that reaches your table is worthy of the name that is on
the box.
Distribution
You've probably seen our 18-wheeled traveling billboards
driving down the highway. Our trucks, with the big Tyson
logo and "It's what your family deserves" emblazoned on
the side, are probably full of our products headed
toward more satisfied customers.
Our longhaul fleet operates 650 units that serve the
48 contiguous states along with Canada and Mexico. The
division serves more than 1,200 Tyson customers on a
weekly basis, as well as hauling more than 350 loads per
week for outside companies.
Our dispatchers use advanced telephone, computer, and
satellite technology to provide real-time location
updates on our equipment.
Our fleet trailers are specially designed to offer
high load capacity as well as high thermal efficiency.
If they were to stand alone, the combined Tyson
transportation teams of longhaul, shuttle, and route
sales would constitute one of the top ten refrigerated
carriers in the country.
In addition to our own trucks, we work with outside
carriers to haul about half of what we produce.
